Bridging Biology Course

Overview

The Biology Bridging Course places emphasis on building conceptual understanding and developing skill sets to prepare you for first-year biology units.

The course does not offer formal accreditation or prerequisite qualifications for University of Sydney enrolment.

Faculty of Science

Content

You will explore core biology concepts in four modules, one module per week:

  • Diversity & Evolution
  • Cell Biology
  • Energy
  • Genetics & Inheritance

Statement of Completion

  • You will receive a Statement of Completion upon course completion.It is not a qualification recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
  • The Statement of Completion does not hold any accreditation or qualifications for enrolment into University of Sydney degrees.

MySydney Entry and Scholarship Scheme

MySydney scholarship recipients may qualify for complimentary enrolment in the Faculty of Science Bridging Courses. For more information see MySydney Entry and Scholarship Scheme. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you will receive a separate invitation to register for these courses.

In Semester 2, all Science Bridging courses are offered online only. This means there are an unlimited number of places, therefore if you think you meet the eligibility criteria, it is advisable to wait before registering and paying immediately for your course.

The course is suitable for assumed knowledge of biology which will support students moving into the first year of their tertiary studies. It is designed for science students enrolling in first-year biology and have not completed HSC Biology (or equivalent) or found Biology difficult at school. Anyone may take this bridging course regardless of which tertiary institution they are enrolling in.

Online self-paced

The online self-paced option includes chapter notes, recorded digital lectures, online worksheets and online quizzes. The course will commence 6 July 2026, with 4 weeks of active online support provided by the course facilitor. From 3 August 2026, participants can still access the learning materials and complete the course, but facilitator support will not be available. Access to the course will conclude 30 October 2026. Invitations to the content will be sent via email.

Materials

All course materials are provided electronically through our Learning Management System (LMS) called Canvas 2. After enrolment, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access the LMS. If you have been enrolled in Canvas 2 before, log in using the email address you enrolled with.

Software

We recommend using a desktop computer or laptop. Ensure compatibility by accessing Canvas on the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari.

Viewing on a mobile device? If you're using the Canvas app, please download the latest version and adjust your app settings to access all images and videos on the site.

There will be quizzes and challenges throughout the modules to test your knowledge, and a Statement of Completion for those who complete the course. The Statement of Completion does not hold any accreditation or qualifications for University of Sydney degrees or enrolment.

All courses must be paid in advance of commencing your course. We accept the following payment methods:

Please note the following:

  • if you enrol in a course that starts within seven (7) days from the course purchase date, or it has already commenced, a refund will not be granted in any circumstance, and you will not be eligible to withdraw from this course or to claim a credit voucher for the course cost;
  • if you enrol in a Bridging course (Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics) delivered by the Faculty of Science and cancel your enrolment or order within 48 hours of your purchase, we will refund the fees in full.

Important information

  • The online self-paced option will commence Monday 6 July 2026 and conclude on Friday 30 October 2026.
  • Facilitators are only available from Monday 6 July to Friday 31 July 2026.
  • No facilitator support will be available from the commencement of Semester 2 (Monday 3 August 2026).
  • When you enrol, you will receive access to the Learning Management System, Canvas, but the content won't be made available until Monday 6 July 2026.
  • Although you can work through the course content at your own pace, it must still be completed within this timeframe. No access to the course after 30 October is available.
